While traveling recently we encountered a problem of a barking dog - in a quiet, suburban neighborhood and quite annoying to local residents. What to do? Call the dogcatcher; report it to the police; post a comment on Facebook. A small problem most likely widely experienced.
We shake our heads in disbelief that various religious and political groups cannot get along, that our cities are on edge or that even small communities experience tension. Yet a barking dog can throw a neighborhood into angst.
Another option to complaining or "posting" is to just "talk". There is a tool that provides a starting point for respectful talk and has been promoted by every spiritual tradition for thousands of years - the Golden Rule! Perhaps you have seen signs popping up in and around the greater Hudson area promoting it!
So, let's talk. On August 26th the local Golden Rule team is asking that you join neighbors and friends to celebrate talk - be it from another viewpoint, a different value-system, or a belief you don't share. This is an opportunity to re-acquaint with our neighbors, friends and family.
So start planning NOW. It is easy - put out your Golden Rule sign, and invite folks – by email, a flyer, word of mouth - to gather in a neighborhood space, be it a front porch, back yard or other gathering space. Declare that heartfelt talk comes from respect for others and is the starting point to creating community.
