[ARCHIVED] 2nd St/Hwy 35 Update 08/10

2nd St Hwy 25 Logo

Greetings,

As you probably noticed, there is a flurry of activity in the downtown area this week. The contractor is hard at work trying to get the milling, paving, and curb/sidewalk work completed in the next few weeks.

Here is a rundown of the activity anticipated for the next couple of weeks:

This week:

  • Front Street to Coulee Road:
    • Finish concrete patches near the boat launch, Edina Realty, and Front Street
    • Finish curb and storm sewer inlet work
    • Concrete curb/gutter at the driveway to Lolo’s restaurant
    • Asphalt pavement between Lolo’s driveway and Coulee Road intersection
  • Coulee Road to Vine Street:
    • Southbound traffic will continue to be detoured to 1st Street
    • Paving asphalt pavement on west half (southbound lanes) today and tomorrow
    • Finish curb and sidewalk work on east half (northbound lanes)
  • Vine Street to Lake Mallalieu:
    • Concrete paving for travel lanes between Division Street and Vine Street on Thursday
  • North Hudson:
    • Paving concrete pavement in Monroe Street and Michaelson Street intersections
    • Grading between Michaelson Street and Sommers Street

Next week:

  • Front Street to Coulee Road:
    • Milling remainder of concrete pavement between Lolo’s driveway and Coulee Road intersection
  • Coulee Road to Vine Street:
    • Southbound traffic will continue to be detoured to 1st Street. Northbound traffic will be shifted to use the southbound travel lane through the downtown area. Access to side streets on the east side of 2nd Street will be restricted.
    • Milling concrete pavement sometime during the week.
    • Joint repair on the concrete pavement after milling.
  • Vine Street to Lake Mallalieu:
    • Concrete curb, driveway aprons, and parking lanes between Division Street and Vine Street late in the week
  • North Hudson:
    • Begin utility work at Sommers Street intersection
    • Some utility work outside the travel lanes at the South Street intersection

The schedule, as always, is dependent on weather and unforeseen site conditions.

The question that seems to be on everyone’s mind right now is “when will access to North Hudson close”? The answer to that question is pretty much solidified at this point: August 23rd is when the access to North Hudson from Hudson will close. The closure period will last until Friday, September 3rd, at which time the roadway will reopen but will be reduced to one lane taking turns via a traffic signal. During the closure period, no traffic will be allowed between Division Street in Hudson and South Street in North Hudson, no exceptions. Traffic to North Hudson will need to use the signed detour via Interstate 94, Minnesota Highway 95, and the Stillwater bridge (or use another available route). Emergency services are aware of the closure timeframe and have made plans to keep emergency services available to North Hudson residents during the closure period.

For those interested, there will be a meeting tomorrow, August 11th, beginning at 5:30 pm at North Hudson Village Hall, 400 7th Street N, North Hudson, WI 54016 to discuss the upcoming access closure to North Hudson.

You may have noticed that the construction activities seemed to skip over the intersection of 2nd Street and Coulee Road/Buckeye Street. Work there is still upcoming but not currently scheduled. The contractor needs to complete the work north of Coulee Road to allow southbound traffic to return to 2nd Street in order for the intersection work to get underway. The intersection will experience some nighttime closures in order to complete the work. We will update you when we have a more solidified date for that work.

Also, for those of you living along 2nd Street north of Vine Street, you will likely be hearing sawing noises during the nighttime hours of Thursday night. This work is to cut joints in the new concrete pavement to avoid crack formation. Unfortunately, this work has to be completed in a very specific time window so the night work is unavoidable. This will occur again for one night next week when the parking lane pavement is constructed.
